PRESIDENT
Angelina Benavides Hey there y'all! I'm Angelina Benavides and I am extremely greatful to be serving as your Indio FFA President for the 2018-2019 school year. I am a senior, this is my fourth and final year enrolled in the Agricultural Department and my third year serving as a chapter officer. Besides my officer duties, I have created a landscape for the Riverside County Fair, attended many leadership conferences, and I have raised a Market Swine for my SAE project since my freshman year and I am absolutely stoked for my final pig this year! Outside of FFA, I have played Volleyball, been a CSF member for three years now, and for my final year of CSF I will be proudly serving as the Treasurer. I have put countless hours into this chapter and organization because I want to give back to the amazing members of this chapter who gave me a place that I can call home. I hope during this year of service, I can encourage members to find their place in this chapter. Let's make this year unforgettable!

SECRETARY
Carolina Garcia Hello my name is Carolina Garcia and I am this years Indio FFA chapter Secretary! I am so excited for what this year has in store for my officers and I. I look forward to meeting our new members and working with our returners. I chose to run for office because FFA is one of my many passions here at Indio High School. I always wear my jacket with pride and to finally have one with a name and a position on it feels official, exciting, and special. Along with FFA I have also been apart of ASB, CSF, Theatre, Troupe #8627, Tennis, and Soccer. I honestly don’t know where I would be without FFA because I have learned and experienced so much thanks to my AMAZING teachers and friends. I hope that along with doing my job this year, that I help other members expirience some pretty great memories too. I owe a lot to FFA because it has helped me in so many ways and expirience some unique days, like raising 2 pigs or going to some pretty exciting conventions filled with people who love FFA just as much as I do. To everyone that I meet this year, I hope we make many more great memories and friendships! And to my Indio FFA members, I can’t wait to work with all of you and create another great year here at Indio!💙💛

DELEGATE
Karen M. Cruz Hello, my name is Karen M Cruz and I'm this year's Indio FFA 2018-19 Delegate. It's been a dream to be a part of such a wonderful organization. I've know FFA since my 5th grade year when my older sister would take me to the FFA events and livestock. By being in the Agricultural Pathways I've been able to meet people that have the same passion as me. They were like me because of how much passion they have for FFA. This year it's going to be my 3rd year in livestock and raising a lamb because lambs amazing. Since I love animals I've decided to enter Vet science and learn so much from Miss Powell. FFA isn't just a organization, it's a second family built of great leadership. Indio FFA got me our of my comfort zone and made me a better and stronger person I've become. I'm a active member and would like to inspire others to get in the Ag pathway and get ready for your journey to begin. Like our motto " Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live, Living to Serve"
Than you!💙💛 |
Mamie Powell |
Mamie Powell has been teaching agriculture for 15 years. After, graduating from Loma Linda University at La Sierra with a Bachelors of Science degree in Agriculture Science, she worked at many different jobs in the agriculture industry like nursery, floral and greenhouse. Finally, she started her own business, a small organic farm in Redlands. While there, she became interested in teaching and was invited to teach middle school part time at Montessori in Redlands. She was soon asked to help start the Grove School in Redlands, a public charter, Montessori high school. There, she established an agriculture education program and helped the students charter a FFA chapter.
After a few years, she had an opportunity to work at Norco HS where she taught small engines, agriculture mechanics, vet science, biology, floriculture and earth science in their agriculture program. She also coached vegetable, specialty animal and BIG teams and helped with speech and proficiency awards. Six years later, the Grove School asked her to return and help expand the farm and the agriculture education program so she returned to help establish a UC approved agriculture science pathway in curriculum and expanded the farm to about 4 acres with a production field to supply local restaurants and grocery stores and a smaller half-acre field for specialty crops to grow for the farmer’s market she helped the students start. She helped students with a breeding boar goat project, a Cotswold wool sheep, breeding project and a blacksmithing project. Now, she feels very fortunate to be part of the Indio HS agriculture education program and looks forward to all the exciting possibilities. |
Cesar Lopez |
Our youngest advisor is down-to-earth and very understanding. His car rides are lively with music coming from the radio and his mouth and laughter is always beside him. Mr. Lopez is going to take over our Chapter as our more experience advisors depart, but what is more exciting is the fact that he used to be a member of the Indio Chapter.
He wanted to get experience with working with animals and was introduced to the FFA when the representatives of the Indio Chapter visited his middle school. He was hooked and looked forward to his involvement in the FFA. He was the leader of the Indio Chapter for three years starting his sophomore and junior years as the reporter and eventually became the President of 2001 -2002. His goal was accomplished by raising three market swine and one market steer for the National Date Festival located in Indio. Not only did he get experience with livestock but with horticulture. He exhibited three junior landscapes which he placed first for all three and a Best of Show. He also took orders for the floral class during lunch. Mr. Lopez participated in various contests and was serious about them. He was in B.I.G., Parliamentary Procedure, and Floriculture. His floral team placed 2nd in the State at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo State FFA Judging Finals in 2002. The recent degree that he was received was the State Degree in 2002. Mr. Lopez attended California Polytechnic State University and San Luis Obispo and majored in Agriculture Science with a minor in Environmental Horticulture Science. He completed his Bachelors in 2007 and is currently completing his Masters in Agriculture Education. He has been teaching for two years, one being here at Indio High School. Prior to teaching, Mr. Lopez was a Preserve Ranger for a nature preserve in which he helped protect many coastal species of plants and animals. He also joined AmeriCorps and was stationed at an organic farm which he helped rehabilitate and train individuals that lived with a mental illness. He helped established a laying hen program, ran the weekly farm stand, published an informational blog website for the farm and provided educational classes during his time at the organic farm. |
